Outdoor security lighting protects people and property

Did you know outdoor security lighting cuts crime by a staggering 39%? The ultimate purpose of security lighting is to protect people and property. When the day fades to night, it can become more difficult to see the things around you. Illuminating walkways, driveways, steps, parking lots, and entrances help to reduce the chances of accident or injury and protects from potential intruders.  While its purpose may be protection, security lighting can also add curb appeal and value to your business’s exterior.

Of course, placement of your lights counts a great deal. Gray Connective has some lighting tips for you depending on the style of lighting you are choosing to install at your business.

Flood Lighting– Flood lights are durable, made to withstand the elements and provide a bright exterior illumination to a wide area. A little flood lighting can go a long way. You may be thinking a bright, intense light above your door would provide enhanced security, that’s not necessarily true. Having such blinding light so close to a point of entry can actually work to a criminal’s advantage by creating deeper shadows concealing possible activity. Instead, consider mounting your flood lights up along the roof line. This way they will shine on the better part of your business’s landscape and are less likely to be tampered with.  Install motion detecting lights in the area above your doors.

Ambient Lighting– Light posts and surface lighting can increase security around your business’s perimeter and add character to your business. Position your light posts low, around 5-6 feet high and near pathways. Position surface lighting nearby to decrease the shadows that criminals can fall into around your business. Also, make sure your ambient lighting isn’t harsh or glaring. With the advances made in commercial security lighting, your business doesn’t need to look like a prison yard at midnight in order to provide light that ensures safety. Soft light provides enough illumination and is even more of a deterrent than constant bright lights.

Spotlight Lighting– Spotlights are another go-to for business owners because they are inexpensive and energy-efficient. Spotlights offer a condensed light beam, which makes them perfect for highlighting a smaller specific area. Although spotlights direct their light to one spot only, they do work very well at illuminating that area.

Footpath Lighting– Besides being aesthetically pleasing along your entrance way and around landscaping, this type of illumination also offers a large degree of safety. Lighting around pathways help prevent tripping and slip and fall injuries.

From artfully positioned flood lights and strategic footpath lighting, to spotlights and mood-enhancing light scaping, your options for exterior security illumination are endless. To find the best outdoor lighting for your commercial property, talk to the professionals.
